Explained for every age
For kids (7–11)
Where two bones meet and move, like the knee or the elbow. The ends are covered with smooth, slippery cartilage, and a capsule with fluid oils them. The muscle pulls on the bone and bends it.
For teens (12–16)
A movable joint: bones with hyaline cartilage at their ends, a fibrous capsule with a synovial membrane that produces lubricating fluid, ligaments that limit movement and sometimes menisci that spread the load. Hinge joints (elbow; the knee is a modified hinge that also rotates a little) flex and extend; ball-and-socket joints (shoulder, hip) turn in all directions.
Pre-Med (17+)
Diarthrosis: avascular articular hyaline cartilage (nourished by synovial fluid), fibrous capsule, synovial membrane (type A and B synoviocytes; hyaluronic acid and lubricin), intra- and extracapsular ligaments, fibrocartilage menisci, bursae. Types: plane, hinge, pivot, condyloid, saddle, ball-and-socket. Movements: flexion–extension, abduction–adduction, rotation, circumduction.
